Our History

In 1920, the Henderson County Library had its grand opening in the Henderson County Courthouse in Athens, Texas. This library was established and maintained by the volunteers of The Current Literature Club for more than 50 years.
In 1972, thanks to a referendum vote, the reorganized public library, now known as the Henderson County Clint W. Murchison Memorial Library opened in its new location in the town's former post office.
In 1987, the building was expanded to add a children's wing.

In 2020, a stained glass window was installed over the entrance of the library to commemorate a century of library service in Henderson County.
